I have to review these two movies together because they are both about women in the seventies who stood out among women, bucked the conventional roles of women, and made us all better for it in the end.
I cried all the way through Secretariat. What is it about horses? What is it about the way they stride forth that makes me want to do the same thing? To be extraordinary. Isn’t that the point for each of us? To find ...read more
Outside the Law is the story of three young boys removed from their home in Algeria during the French occupation (I’m sure the French called it something else) after World War II, and how they survived without the security of a place to go, a country of which they were citizens. They approach their displacement in different ways; one becomes a flim-flam man, looking for a quick financial fix, and the other two end up fighting in the underground to ...read more
I’m from New York. Country music? Not so much. I don’t even remember there ever being a country and western music station in New York, although I’m sure there is one.
When country started crossing over, and country singers got into my soft-rock market, I thought, Wow. I like country music. I’m country. Hey y’all, check this out! And, then I went and bought cowboy boots. I think that was 1989.
Now I watch the CMAs from Nashville and find myself sitting ...read more
I loved it. All the reviewers are wrong. It’s fabulous. What is it about sequels and reviewers? The only sequel I can remember that won the hearts of reviewers was the Godfather II, and we all know that it’s not really a movie anyway, it’s a movement. Anyway, I think the time for putting down sequels is over except in the case of Hannibal which was terrible. The minute Jodi Foster said no they should have put it on the ...read more
Epiphanies. Oprah calls them “ah ha” moments. I had one yesterday centered around The West Wing.
I have been watching reruns of The West Wing on TV for the last few weeks and loving them. I never watched it when it was on, so watching an episode each night has been a blast. In fact, I cancelled a dinner plan last week to come home and watch it. Zoe (President Bartlett’s daughter) had been kidnapped by Terrorists, and while I figured they ...read more
I saw Lisa Cholodenko on Charlie Rose with Julienne Moore talking about her new film, The Kids are Alright, and thought it was a must see just because Lisa was so articulate and Julienne was so adoring. She went on and on about how much she’d wanted to do a Cholondenko film. I thought I should check it out.
It’s the story of a lesbian couple’s two children, sired by a sperm donor, and their desire to know him and the dynamics of a family ...read more
I have to start this review with the fact that everyone said not to bother seeing it; that the new Sex and the City was not as good as the first one and it’s a flop. So, after seeing it, I did go look at some of the reviews and shook my head in wonderment. If you have a man review a picture made purely for women (ok, and gay men), then you will never get an understanding of the ...read more
Not that I have a TV problem mind you, but I came to realize that living alone, I do turn on the TV when I get home at night. I have talked to other single home dwellers who say they do the same thing. It’s company. But, if I sit down to watch, I can sit there all night. Or an entire weekend afternoon. And, what’s with me watching the same movies over and over again? Can we talk about ...read more
What a plot! I’m not sure I should give you the plot because it’s not revealed until the end of the movie, and that means I would ruin it for you if you choose to go. The reason to see the film is the plot. It’s thought provoking. It’s believable, and that makes it scary as hell. Unless, of course, you are from another country other the the great U.S. of A. Is it possible we could be so calculating?
The ...read more
You may remember my review last summer of The Hurt Locker, the film that took it all at the Academy Awards last night. Not only is this the first time a woman has won the coveted award, but I really do believe that her touching, personal perspective of the personal toil on war, was one of the reasons why. War, it appears, is also about the bond between those risking their lives in the fight for whatever is the political ...read more
