Movie Review: Miral

I love a movie that does everything right—dialog, cinematography, acting, plot, redeeming value, relevance—and Miral is just that movie.

Miral is a must-see. And for those of you with an aversion to subtitles, there are only a few, so you will be fine. Based on Rula Jebreal‘s novel about her own life, the movie walks us through the inception of the State of Israel and the ensuing escalation of the Palestinian conflict that followed, all through the eyes of a young ...read more

Oprah Speaks to Barbara Walters

Last night, Barbara Walters did an hour-long interview with Oprah, who we all know is the most successful educator on television. I don’t think Oprah does a lot of these interviews, but watching this one, you had to realize why Oprah has such reach. Her soundbites are not just brilliant, they ring true and they bring it home. Everyone can relate, and often it makes you want to re-evaluate and do what you are doing better, or do more.

Here are some highlights:

Elizabeth Edwards: Saint?

Don’t get me wrong; I’m sorry she died. I’m especially sorry for her children. I’m extra especially sorry for her youngest two, who are too young to lose their mom, especially considering all the personal pain they have had over the past few years with the public breakup of their parents’ marriage. I have often thought about those two young children, and can only imagine what was said to them by their peers at school, what they have overheard, or ...read more

Movie Review: Burlesque

Please remember when you go to see Burlesque—and you do need to go see it—that Cher must be given respect. She has won six Golden Globes, one Academy Award (for Moonstruck), and one Academy Award nomination (for Silkwood, clearly her finest hour).  Everyone’s entitled to a bad day, and it’s not even her fault. She had no lines that could possibly be uttered with any authenticity because no one would say them at all. She does one fabulous number on ...read more

Movie Review: The King’s Speech

Colin Firth, welcome to the big time. You are a magnificent actor and we expect you to rise to great heights from now on. No more Bridget Jones for you. Those days are over. Sure, there were signs (Pride and Prejudice), but nothing like the incredible breadth of this role and nothing as difficult to bring to us. Your performance in The King’s Speech is Oscar worthy, and perhaps even more important, worthy of being used as a teaching tool ...read more

Movie Review: Secretariat & Made in Dagenham

I have to review these two movies together because they are both about women in the seventies who stood out among women, bucked the conventional roles of women, and made us all better for it in the end.

I cried all the way through Secretariat. What is it about horses? What is it about the way they stride forth that makes me want to do the same thing? To be extraordinary. Isn’t that the point for each of us? To find ...read more

Movie Review: Outside the Law

Outside the Law is the story of three young boys removed from their home in Algeria during the French occupation (I’m sure the French called it something else) after World War II, and how they survived without the security of a place to go, a country of which they were citizens. They approach their displacement in different ways; one becomes a flim-flam man, looking for a quick financial fix, and the other two end up fighting in the underground to ...read more

CMA Awards Review

I’m from New York. Country music? Not so much. I don’t even remember there ever being a country and western music station in New York, although I’m sure there is one.

When country started crossing over, and country singers got into my soft-rock market, I thought, Wow. I like country music. I’m country. Hey y’all, check this out! And, then I went and bought cowboy boots. I think that was 1989.

Now I watch the CMAs from Nashville and find myself sitting ...read more

Movie Review: Money Never Sleeps

I loved it. All the reviewers are wrong. It’s fabulous. What is it about sequels and reviewers? The only sequel I can remember that won the hearts of reviewers was the Godfather II, and we all know that it’s not really a movie anyway, it’s a movement. Anyway, I think the time for putting down sequels is over except in the case of Hannibal which was terrible. The minute Jodi Foster said no they should have put it on the ...read more

Living my life or The West Wing’s. What’s it going to be?

Epiphanies. Oprah calls them “ah ha” moments. I had one yesterday centered around The West Wing.

I have been watching reruns of The West Wing on TV for the last few weeks and loving them. I never watched it when it was on, so watching an episode each night has been a blast. In fact, I cancelled a dinner plan last week to come home and watch it. Zoe (President Bartlett’s daughter) had been kidnapped by Terrorists, and while I figured they ...read more
