Movie Review: The Ghost Writer

What a plot! I’m not sure I should give you the plot because it’s not revealed until the end of the movie, and that means I would ruin it for you if you choose to go. The reason to see the film is the plot. It’s thought provoking. It’s believable, and that makes it scary as hell. Unless, of course, you are from another country other the the great U.S. of A. Is it possible we could be so calculating?

The movie is well cast, and you also don’t realize that until the end. Pierce Brosnon has such a nice guy look to him that it’s hard to imagine him as the bad guy, but he plays it well.

Here’s the thing. It’s directed by Roman Polanski. You remember him. He slept with a ten year old (exaggerating, but just a little) and is still up on charges in the United States for rape. It’s been thirty something years, and he never returned to face the music. The movie takes place on Martha’s Vineyard and outside of Boston, but I just didn’t ‘feel’ it so stayed as the credits ran to check out where it was filmed. It was filmed in London and France, not on the Vineyard, which I assume is because he can’t be on our shores without being arrested, which of course leads me to my point. He is a fugitive from our country, running from rape charges. But we can still show his movies in our cinemas? Is there something wrong with that, or is it me?

Ewan McGregor is really good in the role of the isolated writer. He has to play it down, so to speak, and he does that really well. It’s like when you are on the elevator and late to get where you are going and you want to jump as soon as the doors open, but you need to wait and let the little old lady go first and not show that you are in a hurry. That’s the way he plays the whole role and it really works.

Kim Cattrall would be excellent in her role except for the fact that every time you see her you can only think she’s visiting the movie from Sex in the City’s set. She’s a good actor, and it’s sad that I can’t see her as anything other than Carrie’s friend who sleeps with everyone and puts sushi on her naked body on Valentine’s Day for her boyfriend. Sorry Kim.

All in all, it’s a good view. I’m still feeling guilty about putting money in the coffers of Roman Polanski, but I’ll get over it.

I will not go see it no matter how good it is and give him my $$. I feel the same way about Woody Allen and won’t see any of his films either. I know my $8-$10 won’t make a difference to them, but it does to me. I too think Roman’s films should not be shown here until he faces the music. I don’t care how long ago it was….SHE WAS 13 YEARS OLD!! There should be consequences to his actions.
